Public Library Services for Patrons with Print Disabilities: Library Box

This is a libguide for public library staff to learn about NNELS and CELA services for patrons with print disabilities.

Library Box

The Library Box is a combination of a router, USB drive and software that allows you to download materials onto the USB drive, put the drive into the Library Box and then wirelessly transfer that material to a listening device. It can hold 32G or approximately 300 NNELS zip files.

If you have any questions, please contact Angela Schnell at Provincial Library and Literacy Office (angela.schnell@gov.sk.ca, 306-787-5977).

Library Box Guide

Why would I use it?

In a branch where the wireless internet is unreliable, it allows library staff to help a patron get material on their listening device wirelessly. It can also be taken to a patron’s home, a care centre or a classroom that does not have reliable wireless internet and patrons can access the content available on the Library Box. PLLO has preloaded 40 NNELS content onto the Library Box. These titles are primarily by Saskatchewan authors and publishers. Libraries can add and delete NNELS titles, as needed.

How do I use it?

A patron will need to have purchased and downloaded  VoiceDream Reader (available for iOS and Android)  onto their listening device.  VoiceDream Reader will unzip the audio files and play the books. VoiceDream Reader can also be used to wirelessly download files directly from nnels.ca, wherever a reliable internet connection is available.

Downloading content from the Library Box to a listening device:

  1. Plug in the Library Box.
  2. If using a phone, turn off cellular data in your settings, and connect to the Library Box Wi-Fi network.
  3. From within VoiceDream, click on the + and then on More…
  4. Select Legacy Web Browser, and then X at the top.
  5. Click on the + again and select legacy web browser.
  6. Type in librarybox.lan
  7. Click on the menu button in the top right hand corner.
  8. Select audio.
  9. Choose a title.
  10. When download is complete, click on OK.
  11. Click X in top right hand corner.

Downloading material onto the Library Box:

There is room on the Library Box to add additional content.  You can also delete preloaded titles that you no longer need.

  1. Search for NNELS titles in the SILS catalogue or go to nnels.ca.
  2. Select a title, login and download a title to your computer. It usually saves in the downloads folder.
  3. Put the flash drive in your computer and transfer the titles to the Library Box – Shared – Audio folder.
  4. Eject the flash drive. Put it back into the Library Box before plugging it in.  If you take out the flash drive and add new content, unplug the library box, and plug it in again.
  5. Check that your device is connected to the LibraryBox wireless network.
  6. Open VoiceDream and click on the + sign.
  7. Select Legacy Web Browser.
  8. Type librarybox.lan into the browser.
