Creating Welcoming Environments

To help increase First Nation, Métis and Inuit participation at public libraries, it is strongly encouraged to create a welcoming atmosphere.

The following are several suggestions to make your public library environment as welcoming as possible for First Nation, Métis and Inuit patrons:

  • Displaying signage in the local Aboriginal language
  • Displaying exhibits of Aboriginal art
  • Presenting displays of Aboriginal authors and Aboriginal materials
  • Locating paperbacks near the entrance
  • Playing Aboriginal music in the library e.g. pow wow, flute, fiddle, Aboriginal artists etc.
  • Have suggestion boxes available and follow up on requests and inquires
  • Opening during the evening for adult patrons (particularly in the school-housed public libraries)
  • Extending invitations to local schools with First Nations, Métis and Inuit students
  • Extending invitations to First Nation, Métis and Inuit adults through local Aboriginal groups and organizations
  • Develop and provide culturally appropriate programming for First Nation, Métis and Inuit patrons
  • Offer programming to increase awareness of the histories and cultures of First Nation and Métis in Saskatchewan
